Demystifying Decluttering

Decluttering doesn’t mean getting rid of everything.

Decluttering is often mentioned in the world of organizing because it is pivotal to having an organized and functional home. It’s also a word that makes people cringe. They cringe because they think that if they declutter they have to get rid of everything in their home with exception of the clothes on their backs and plate and fork to eat with. They are also afraid of what happens when they let something go. But that is not what Tailored Organizing, and most professional organizers for that matter, are here to do when it comes to helping households declutter. We want you to KEEP the items that, as Marie Kondo would say, “spark joy” and/or serve some sort of purpose in your life and home. We will help you make decisions on items that you’re on the fence about. At its core, decluttering is the process of sifting through your belongings and letting go of items that no longer serve a purpose or bring value to your life. This could include broken items, things you've outgrown, or possessions that no longer resonate with you.

But what if I have the space? Or what if I “need” something in the future and I’ve given it away? Well, those unnecessary items not only take up physical space in your home but also occupy mental space in your mind and affect your emotions. Letting go of them can be freeing for your body, mind, and soul. It's a way to lighten the load and create a more peaceful environment, even if you have the space. And if you haven’t used an item over the last year, it’s safe to say you probably won’t be needing it any time soon.

As stated previously, clutter isn't just about physical mess; it can also impact your mental state. Research suggests that clutter can increase stress levels because our minds prefer an environment that has order. If a space is cluttered then our brain struggles with what to focus on, bouncing from one item to the next trying to make sense of it all, and decluttering will alleviate this.

Decluttering is about discerning between what we want and what we truly need. Surrounding ourselves with things that bring joy and meaning can turn our homes into sanctuaries rather than stressors. Ultimately, decluttering is about creating a space that does not overwhelm you but nurtures and inspires.
